Energy Efficient Styling Tips for Your Bedroom

    Last updated 1 year ago

There are many stylish ways to make your bedroom more energy efficient and improve its appearance at the same time, from repainting your walls to replacing curtains with blinds and shutters.

    Natural Light

The importance of colour in room design cannot be understated. Not only does colour influence a person’s mood and room ambience levels, but your choice of colour can also affect the room’s temperature, with lighter colours reflecting more sunlight and darker hues absorbing more heat.

Making strategic use of mirrors is an economical way to boost ambient light levels in smaller bedrooms with limited windows, which can reduce the need for electrical lighting, while replacing curtains with blinds will offer greater control over light levels.

    Natural Heating and Cooling

Blinds can also help to regulate temperatures inside rooms so you won’t need to rely so much on heating in winter and air conditioning in summer. Plantation shutters offer even greater heat insulation, whether installed on the exterior or interior of windows, and can also be a stylish addition to contemporary and traditional bedrooms alike, with a range of materials and styles to choose from.

If you’re building your home from the ground up, positioning bedroom windows to face the sun and catch the breeze will allow you to make the most of nature through passive home design.

How to Measure Cord Loops for Blinds

    Last updated 1 year ago

When fitting cords to horizontal or vertical blinds, it’s important to make sure the cord loops are cut and tied to the right length. Especially if you have young children whose safety could be at risk from overhanging cords.

This video demonstrates how to measure continuous cord loops for blinds. These cords should already be cut to the desired length by your blinds supplier, but in the event that you are modifying cords or replacing damaged cords, there are simple steps to follow to determine the length needed for your windows.

Blinds cord lengths can be measured when the blind shade is already in place, but for more accurate measurements it’s recommended to remove the cord loop and lay it on a flat surface, keeping the cord in the looped position throughout.

Blinds cords are produced in regular increments, which may be given in millimetres or inches. A conversion chart will be useful if you need to convert millimetres to inches or vice versa – with a 2.7 mm loop being equivalent to one and 1/16 inches, a 3.2 mm loop measuring one and a quarter inches, and a 3.6 mm loop at one and 3/8 inches.

The diameter of the cord loop can be measured by wrapping the cord around a pen or pencil 10 times, pushing the resulting loops together and measuring across the looped length.

How to Keep Your Windows in Good Condition

    Last updated 1 year ago

Keeping your windows in good working order should be top of the DIY home improvement list for all homeowners, as replacing damaged windows can be extremely costly. Installing internal and external window treatments can protect your windows from damage, and regular maintenance will keep these fittings looking good in all seasons.

    Window Protection

The best way to protect your windows from the elements is to install external blinds or shutters made from a suitably durable material. External blinds and shutters will keep your windows free from impacts and damage from wind and rain, as well as boost home security and add value to your property.

Installing exterior blinds before the harsh winter weather arrives will also increase your home’s insulation, ensuring even less heat energy is lost to the outside world. Windows protected by blinds will still need to be cleaned and maintained regularly to keep them free from dust and make sure hinges and other components are operating correctly.

    Window Maintenance

It’s important to look after your windows at all times of the year, including winter. Windows that are not well cared for could develop cracks and other damage that can greatly reduce their insulating capacities and allow warm air to escape, which can be a drain on household heating bills. Regular checks of your windows and window frames will allow you to catch signs of damage at an early stage, and cleaning the window panes frequently will also help these to stay clear and free from marks.

    Insulating Your Windows for winter

    Last updated 1 year ago

There are several effective ways to insulate your windows before the winter weather arrives, to minimise heat loss and avoid spending too much on your heating bills. From sealing cracks, using draft excluders, and installing plantation shutters instead of curtains, there’s a solution for every household.

This video from demonstrates one simple, DIY solution for insulating a window, which will reduce excess heat being lost as well as eliminate cold drafts. The surfaces around the window pane should be thoroughly cleaned using an all-purpose cleaner and rag before placing double-sided tape around the frame, taking care to keep the tape straight.

You should then cut a sheet of plastic wrap to the required size for your window, leaving some overlap, and fix it to the tape from top to bottom. After the plastic has been unrolled to cover the window fully, the excess can be trimmed and a hairdryer used to blow out wrinkles and tighten the plastic, resulting in a smoother finish.

An alternative is to buy commercially produced window insulation film or rubber weather sealing to prepare your windows, or to replace your window treatments with solid barriers such as blinds and shutters, which will greatly reduce heat loss. Plantation shutters can be installed internally or externally, and are available in a variety of styles, materials and colours to suit different types of properties.
